The path through Mirkwood is long and dangerous and soon the party worry they will run out of food and water. To add to their struggle, Bombur falls into the water of the black stream and goes into a deep sleep, meaning they must carry him through the forest.

CHAPTER EIGHT: FLIES AND SPIDERS

As the party nears the edge of the forest Bombur wakes and they leave the path, distracted by thirst, hunger and a mysterious flickering through the woods.

Bilbo becomes separated from the rest of the party, eventually finding the Dwarves captured by giant spiders. Bilbo manages to rescue the Dwarves from the spiders using the ring, but they are soon captured by Wood Elves.

CHAPTER NINE: BARRELS OUT OF BOND

Bilbo evades capture by the Wood Elves by using the magic ring. He rescues the Dwarves by stealing the keys to their cells and convincing them to get into empty wine barrels.

The wine barrels are thrown into the river by the Wood Elves and Bilbo manages to grab onto the last barrel as it is thrown, making good the party’s escape.

Finally, the party get out of Mirkwood...

CHAPTER TEN: A WARM WELCOME

The people of Esgaroth and the Wood Elves march on the Lonely Mountain, and demand that the Dwarves share the treasure.

The Dwarves refuse, and Bilbo gives the men and Wood Elves the Arkenstone - Thorin’s greatest treasure. Dwarves loyal to Thorin arrive, and a battle begins. Goblins and Wargs descend on the mountain and do battle with the Dwarves, Elves and men - the Battle of the Five Armies.

The Eagles arrive, and Beorn comes to the rescue at the last moment.

The men, Elves and Dwarves win the battle with the help of Beorn and the Eagles, but Thorin dies.
